2009 Maritime Festival Details:
A special exhibit for the 2009 season will feature information and artifacts on loan from the Cahoon Museum of American Art, which celebrates its 25th anniversary. Items related to the lives and artistic talents of Ralph and Martha Cahoon as well as the history of the museum will be presented.
Self guided tours in the refurbished museum explore the society’s maritime collection. Text panels offer facts and images from the 19th century whaling era along with schooners and Cotuit captains that delivered goods from coast to coast. The early industries of harvesting oysters in our briny waters and the salt works along the shore are highlighted as well. Several museum artifacts showcase marlinspike seamanship, the sailor’s art of knot tying.
Visitors can explore this unique nautical craft first hand, on Saturday, May 23rd with Tom Hadley of Cotuit. He will be at the museum to explain and demonstrate the use of intricate knot tying. Decorative items will be offered for sale including doorstops and jewelry, all made in Cotuit. The museum gift shop will carry several Tom Hadley items for the 2009 season.
Also on Saturday, Cotuit author Martin Sandler will join us to discuss his historical publications. Signed copies of Resolute and Atlantic Ocean: The Illustrated History of the Ocean that Changed the World, will be offered for purchase.
The Dottridge Homestead kitchen exhibit will highlight our connection to the sea. Hearth cooking methods for preparing fish chowder with codfish will be discussed by museum guides. A recipe handout for visitors will include the early chowder ‘receipt’ or recipe from the cookbook The American Frugal Housewife by Mrs. Childs, published in Boston in 1833.
A Cotuit Scanvenger Hunt for children will take place on the museum grounds. All ages can join in the adventure and search for hidden treasures.
