Best Selling Author Larry Tye
Discussing His New Book on Senator Joe McCarthy
August 5, 4-6pm  Lowell Park
RESERVATIONS REQUIRED: CALL 508-428-0461

* * *

A joint presentation by the Historical Society of Santuit & Cotuit and the Cotuit Library will feature New York Times best-selling author Larry Tye, who will discuss his new book, Demagogue: The Life and Long Shadow of Senator Joe McCarthy. Former U.S. Senator Paul Kirk (D-MA) will introduce the program, which will be held at Elizabeth Lowell Field in Cotuit, on Wednesday, August 5, from 4-6 PM. (Rain date August 10th).

Cotuit resident and author Larry Tye got first-ever access to the senator’s personal and professional papers, along with his medical and military records, and he did the first deep dive into recently unsealed transcripts of McCarthy’s closed-door Congressional hearings. What emerges is a nuanced portrait of the archetypal American demagogue, one with special resonance in this era of political division.

In the long history of American bullies, never has one man caused so much damage in such a short time as Senator Joseph McCarthy. We still use “McCarthyism” as a shorthand for reckless accusation and guilt by association. From 1950 to 1954, McCarthy destroyed careers and even entire lives, whipping the nation into a frenzy of paranoia, accusation, loyalty oaths, and terror.

Reservations are required for anyone who wants to attend in person, and will be accepted on a first-come, first-served basis. The audience will be limited to 100 and seating will be socially distanced in the home bleachers at Lowell Field. The talk will be followed by a question-and-answer session and a book sale/signing, with books supplied by Titcomb's Bookshop. The library will live stream on Facebook.

Can We Count on Your Support?

Cotuit resident and best-selling author, Larry Tye , has pledged his
support of the Cotuit Library and the Historical Society of Santuit and Cotuit by offering a live speaking event at Lowell Park for the community on their behalf. Both organizations are in need of funds, having had to cancel important annual fundraisers.

Here's how you can help:
  • Make a donation online or at the event (the Library and the HSSC will split all donations equally).
  • Purchase a copy of Demagogue: The Life and Long Shadow of Senator Joe McCarthy at the event, or in advance from Titcomb's Bookshop. Titcomb's is giving back 20% of the proceeds, and will honor this agreement from now through August 6 whether you buy your book from their physical store, online or at the event. Just be sure to mention the Library and the HSSC!
  • Bid on the chance to have Larry Tye give a private talk to you and your friends--an incredible opportunity that Larry has generously offered.
Support the Cotuit Library and the Historical Society of Santuit and Cotuit! Bid on an amazing opportunity to have Larry Tye give a private talk to you and your friends. This is the perfect way to help these two village treasures that have had to cancel or postpone most of their fundraisers because of the COVID crisis.

We hope you are as excited as we are for this event, and thank you for all the support you can give!
